Mississippi DOT Installing New Traffic Signals

Jackson, Miss. Mississippi motorists will increasingly see flashing yellow arrows when they want to make a left turn.

The state Department of Transportation says it's installing traffic signals that will flash a yellow arrow, replacing circular green signals for left turns at some intersections. Officials say a national study showed drivers had fewer crashes with flashing yellow arrows because some drivers think they can turn left on any green signal without yielding to oncoming traffic.

The new signal reinforces the idea that left-turns are allowed, but first a driver must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding with caution.

The department says it's installing the yellow arrows at 23 locations along Mississippi 463 and U.S. 51 in Madison County. The city of Jackson has begun installing yellow arrows at some intersections.
