Forecasters say the Mississippi River is predicted to reach flood stage of 43 feet in Vicksburg by May 15.

The Vicksburg Post reports that continued rain along the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys and snow in the upper Midwest are causing the rise.

Forecasts on the Lower Mississippi have been adjusted four times in the past 10 days.

The forecast predicts flood stages at Arkansas City, Ark., and Greenville by May 13, and Natchez by May 17.

Marty Pope, senior hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, says the forecast is for up to 5 inches of rain in the next week along the lower Ohio and Cumberland rivers.

That and the snow in the Upper Midwest, Pope says, could keep river levels high through June.
