Desiree Roby, a 6th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection in Hinds County is Mississippi’s 2013 Spelling Bee Champion.
Roby spelled the word 'dowager' in the 26th round. She advances to the 86th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 28-30.
The runner-up is Dev Jaiswal, a 6th grade student from Winston Academy, who won the state bee in 2012. He was eliminated in Round 25 with the word 'styptic'.
Mississippi Public Broadcasting plans to air the event again.
Twenty-nine students from across the state competed for the title.
