Lawmakers Consider Business Tax Breaks

By  |

Mississippi lawmakers are pushing forward with several bills that could give tax breaks to businesses, all in the name of creating more jobs and boosting the economy.

Some question the logic behind the proposals, saying the state is already struggling to collect enough revenue to cover a tight budget.

Wednesday was the deadline for the House and Senate to act on tax and budget bills that were filed in their own chamber. The surviving bills will move to the opposite chamber for more debate.

A wide variety of businesses are being considered for tax credits or exemptions, from home builders to bee keepers.

Lawmakers rejected bills that would've given a property tax exemption to companies for buying pollution control equipment mandated by the federal government.
