NAACP Asks to Delay Elections

A local civil rights group is asking the city of Meridian to delay the upcoming municipal elections.

The Lauderdale County NAACP asked the city Friday to consider an extension.

Officials said they want the delay because the U.S. Department of Justice approved city council ward lines on the same day as the qualifying deadline. The new ward lines affected some candidates running for office.

Some candidates qualified in one ward, based on the old lines, but then were placed in another ward, due to redrawn ward lines.

However, the new lines that were submitted to DOJ for approval were voted on by the city council and published prior to the qualifying deadline.

The organization is asking for a one-month delay. City officials did not have an immediate response.
