Natural Gas Leak

Kemper County, Miss. A natural gas leak in Kemper County Wednesday caused concern but officials were able to shut it off and begin the repair process. The leak started when a logging crew struck a line near the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 397 around 8:00 a.m.

"When I first arrived here the smell was pretty strong," said Kemper County Sheriff James Moore. "We realized that we still had some loggers inside. So, we evacuated them, got in touch with the emergency management director, came up with an emergency plan and we shut down the road from Highway 16 all the way to Melon Road."

Crews from Atmos Energy were called in to fix the problem.

Sheriff Moore said he's just happy that the situation was not worse.

"They have a main line that is close to here," Moore said. "If that main line had been broken like this line had, we would've lost services for the whole entire town of DeKalb because it services that area. So, this potentially could've been a very serious problem."

Shortly after 10 a.m. crews from Atmos were able to shut off the leak and began repairing the broken gas line.
