Garbage Bids Rejected in Neshoba County

Neshoba County has decided not to hire a private company to collect garbage.

The Neshoba Democrat reported that the board of supervisors has rejected a private firm's low bid for weekly residential and commercial garbage collection.

County Administrator Benjie Coats says the county doesn't have the money to contract the door-to-door garbage pickup because of the more than 2,000 exemptions from the annual fee for elderly and disabled residents.

In addition, the county has some remaining debt on its garbage trucks.

Neshoba County increased its monthly garbage fee by $2.50 per household in January to address the debt issue.

The board also eliminated exemptions for new retirees and the newly disabled after Dec. 29, 2011.

Coats says the issue may be revisited.
