New Tour Coming to Merrehope

Posted: Mon 2:46 PM, Dec 31, 2012

The apartment, or cottage, section of Merrehope, which is the original portion of Merrehope, has been rented out for a number of years. Now, the apartment sits empty and officials with Merrehope will begin the restoration of the cottage.

Betty Lou Jones, president of the Meridian Restoration Foundation, tells Newscenter 11, "Because of the history and because of the Civil War interest now, and because this is the 150th anniversary of when Sherman made his way through Mississippi. We're going to begin to restore the apartment, to restore the cottage."

The cottage was originally built in 1858 and is one of only a handful of structures to survive the burning of Meridian in 1863. The cottage is planned to be open for tours in March.
