The Newton County branch of the NAACP hosted an annual event Saturday evening.
It was the 39th annual Freedom Fund and Mother of the Year awards banquet, held at East Central Community College.
The event serves as a fundraiser for the branch of the organization, and the Mother of the Year competition holds special significance to the Newton County chapter.
"The person that advocated the Mother of the Year contest was Medgar Evers," says Newton County NAACP President Richard Coleman, "so we want to uplift him as well."
The keynote address was delivered by the state President of the NAACP Derrick Johnson.
