A pre-conference meeting was held in Meridian Friday in hopes of forming a family justice center here. The center would be a comprehensive resource for victims of domestic violence and abuse.
Wesley House and its partners are gearing up for the 2013 International Family Justice Center Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mississippi's surrounding states offer a family justice center, but the Magnolia State is lacking such an agency.
Officials say Meridian's Wesley House is a natural fit for the growing need for resources.
"We met with the people from San Diego who are with the National Family Justice Center and they were real convincing about the need to have a thing like that here in Meridian," said District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell. "It's my understanding if it gets going it would be the first one in Mississippi. Oh, yeah, we are for it."
The conference is scheduled for April 16-18.
