The historic Jones Cleaners building on 9th street in downtown Meridian was torn down Thursday.
First Presbyterian Church has acquired the property and Jones has moved to 7th Street and 25th Avenue.
The building administrator with First Presbyterian says the church needs access to the upper floors of its administration building. The church will build a tower on the back that will have a fire stairwell, restrooms and an elevator.
"First Presbyterian Church has been trying for over 40 years to acquire this property," said Alan Gartrell. "And we finally got the opportunity when the Troy Cleaners property downtown became available. And we were able to work a deal out with Joey Mabry, the owner of Jones Cleaners, and he took the Troy property, and we took the Jones property."
Gartrell says the church is waiting on the building to be removed before making final plans for the property.
