Pretrial Conference Scheduled in Meridian Gambling Case

Jackson, Miss. A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Jan. 23 for eight people charged with running illegal gambling operations in east Mississippi.

Federal prosecutors say illegal gambling was taking place in Meridian at The Snack Shack, The Sports Connection, commonly referred to as "the Log Cabin," and The New Place.

Authorities say the defendants took wagers on college and professional sporting events and set up illegal gambling devices, such as video poker machines.

The government is seeking forfeiture of eight pieces of property and more than $125,000 in cash.

A filing in U.S. District Court in Jackson says the eight must decide at the conference whether they want to proceed to trial or plead guilty.
