The Meridian City Council's decision to continue the ban on fortune telling has residents speaking out on the issue. The original story Tuesday attracted the most comments on wtok.com.
The city's attorney told the council that banning fortune telling opens the city up for a lawsuit, as bans such as this one have been ruled unconstitutional.
Newscenter 11 asked some of you for your opinions.
"I believe they should not be allowed to practice," said Anita Lee. "It's something that is not scientific. I think it's just another way to take people's money and scam them out of things. And I don't think they should be allowed."
"Well if there are others who want to, I would have nothing against it," said Diana Howell. "You know, for them to go in and have their fortune told. You know sometimes you would like to know but I don't think I would ever go to one."
"Everybody has their personal decisions," said Jonathan Davis. "You can't stop them from thinking of what they want to do. So I say, if they really want to do this, let them do it; see how it works out.
Norma says fortune tellers have helped guide her through life.
"It has helped me," said Norma, who did not give her last name. "Yeah, I don't down them at all. They are as real as anyone else."
But it looks like she won't be seeking this type of spiritual guidance in Meridian as the council has voted to continue a ban against them.
Councilwoman Mary Perry said she believes fortune tellers go against her Christian faith. Norma said she believes they work together.
"I'm not leaving God out, you know," said Norma. "But I believe that God has maybe his hand in it by showing them what is right and wrong and what is going on and everything."
Council members have been told that banning fortune tellers is unconstitutional and is opening the city up for a lawsuit. That's the main concern we heard from the people we spoke with Wednesday. They said they wouldn't necessarily visit a fortune teller but they believe they should be able to do business if they want to.
The issue came up several months ago because a fortune telling business wanted to locate within the city limits.
