Meridian, Miss. The tax assessor for Lauderdale County visited with members of the Downtown Optimist Club at its Tuesday
James Rainey explained the role of tax assessor and took questions from members regarding various taxes and the different rates used by surrounding counties. The main topic was homestead exemption and how important it is for homeowners to sign up.
"The main thing is, when they buy a home they need to come in and sign up for homestead," said Rainey. "And this happens from January 1st to April 1st. And we'd like to encourage anyone who has not signed up come in."
Homestead exemption allows a reduction in property taxes for your primary residence.
