Red Cross Celebrates Volunteers, Success

Meridian, Miss. Local members of the American Red Cross gathered on Thursday night to celebrate all of the organization's accomplishments.

The East Central Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross recognized volunteers during its annual meeting at Meridian City Hall on Thursday. Organizers say 95 percent of the workforce that supports Red Cross is volunteers. It's sometime easy to forget just how much of a need there is right here at home.

"And you see the TV and it's so isolated," board member Curt Goldacker says. "And it's really hard to connect with that when you have a hurricane or tornado disaster somewhere and it's not in your own backyard. But there are people here in Meridian, in the 15 counties, that need that support and that help every day."

Joel Redmond was named Volunteer of the Year during the meeting. It was a very emotional moment for Redmond.
