Relay For Life Kickoff

Lauderdale County is leading the way in the fight against a health epidemic. The county's Relay for Life is now being recognized on the state and regional level. It has now been named as the number one Relay for Life in Mississippi and the number 8 Relay for Life in the Mid-South Region.

'We have great participation from the community. Everyone seems to step in when needed,' says Tripp Ward, who is chairman for the 2013 Relay for Life in Lauderdale County. Ward says he's optimistic that next year's relay will be just as, if not even more, successful.

'We have a lot of new things that we're going to have available for our teams to do as far as fund-raising goes this year. We're expecting to have a turnout of about 100 teams this year and I'm just looking forward to a great year."

More than 8,000 people attended the 2012 Relay for Life at Ray Stadium, and more than $315,000 was raised. All of the funds collected are used in the fight against cancer. As the campaign is kicked off for the next relay, organizers say they are setting a new goal.

'Our goal is to actually to defeat cancer and until we find a cure for cancer, our goal is not going to be accomplished. We're not there to put band-aids on cancer; we're there for support along the way, but we're finding a cure for cancer! That's our mission!'

The 2013 Relay for Life in Lauderdale County will be held Friday, May 3rd. at 6 PM at Ray Stadium. The first meeting for team captains will be held December 6th at 5:30 PM at Mississippi Power Company's auditorium in downtown Meridian.
