Retired Alabama Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston says he gave Roy Moore a $1,000 donation in his successful campaign for chief justice in 2000, but he's not supporting Moore as he seeks to return to the office he got kicked out of in 2003.

Houston, a Republican, says he will vote for Democrat Bob Vance based on Vance's record and Moore's record. Houston said in an interview that Moore surprised his fellow justices by placing his Ten Commandments monument in the state judicial building and his actions on budget issues strained relationships with trial court judges and legislators.

Moore said he's surprised Houston would support a candidate who has backed President Barack Obama. He also released a letter Houston wrote Moore in 2002, where he called Moore "a man of great faith and principle."
