The former lawmaker who was with state Rep. Jessica Upshaw before she died in an apparent suicide says she had struggled for years with depression.
Upshaw's body was found Sunday outside the home of former state representative, Clint Rotenberry, of Mendenhall.
Police Chief Candy McCullum says there's nothing to suggest the death was anything other than suicide.
Upshaw, a 53-year-old Republican from Diamondhead, is believed to have died of a gunshot wound.
Rotenberry called Upshaw his "soul mate", saying they were both divorced and had been involved for years. He said Monday that they spent the weekend together and there was no indication she was contemplating suicide.
Rotenberry says Upshaw had one of the sharpest legislative minds he'd ever seen. He recalled her as passionate and driven by her convictions.
