Rural Utilities at Work in South Mississippi

Electric power associations serving more than 355,000 members south of I-20 in Mississippi reported 79,500 meters without electric service Wednesday night.

The association said high winds and rain in the southern part of Mississippi are responsible for the outages.

Senior vice-president Ron Stewart said severe weather conditions slow the power restoration process, because it's not safe to place linemen in areas flooded or suffering high levels of wind.

In areas where it’s safe to travel, Stewart said emergency crews are working to restore service.
