Sales Tax Proposal Vote

Updated: Wed 12:52 AM, Nov 07, 2012

The Meridian City Council is endorsing an effort that would give municipalities the option of voting on a local sales tax.

Council members approved the measure during their meeting Tuesday morning. Council president, George Thomas, says the vote is just one phase in a statewide effort.

"We're not saying that we're for a sales tax and we're not saying that we're against a sales tax, but what we are saying is that local municipalities should have the right to vote if they want to have a local sales tax,' says Thomas.

The Municipal League is pushing for legislative approval of this measure. The city of Meridian is one of the municipalities in Mississippi supporting the effort. Next legislative session the Municipal League is expected to once again request legislative approval for the proposal.
