A search continued Monday for a man who went missing while boating on the Chunky River.

56-year-old Marcus L. Smith has been missing since a canoe overturned late Saturday evening and he is presumed to have drowned. Two others made it to safety.

Crews have been searching the river but haven't found any signs of him. But Monday, officials said they have been able to narrow the search area.

"We've been doing some searching on the banks at night, what we could do safely," said emergency management director, David Sharp. "We've had people on the banks as well as in the water yesterday and we are back out there today. At this point and time we have found an area of interest."

Officials say they will search through Monday evening and resume Tuesday morning using sonar equipment.

The river level is quite high for the Chunky due to recent rains.

When the incident happened Saturday, the level was nine feet. It was six feet Sunday and five feet Monday. Its normal level is about two feet.
