Sex Offender Sentenced in Mississippi Slaying

Jackson, Miss.

A man has been sentenced to life plus 55 years in prison in the 2012 strangling death of a Brandon, Miss., woman.

The slaying of 59-year-old Lenora Patsy Edhegard prompted state lawmakers to pass legislation on dealing with some convicted sex offenders.

Authorities say 32-year-old Cortrell Rose used a fake Jackson address to register as a sex offender after being released from prison last year.

Investigators say he was really living next door to Edhegard in Brandon when he broke in and strangled her in September 2012.

Michael Guest, district attorney for Madison and Rankin counties, says Rose was sentenced Monday on charges including capital murder and kidnapping.

State lawmakers passed "Lenora's Law" earlier this year, requiring sex offenders to wear GPS tracking bracelets if they're convicted of failing to register.
