Snow Day Affects Schools

Inclement weather caused schools throughout East Mississippi and West Alabama to close Tuesday. Many will also be closed Wednesday.

The decision to close Meridian Public Schools for the day was made about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. District officials say it came late because prior to that they were monitoring the weather and its effects. It wasn't until that time that officials with the Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency alerted them that conditions had become unfavorable for schools to open.

Meridian Public School District will have a makeup day on Feb. 17. Lauderdale County Schools do not factor into their regular school calendar days for inclement weather or snow days.

As a general policy, Superintendent Randy Hodges says Lauderdale County Schools make up days that are missed due to weather conditions during scheduled holiday periods.

Ultimately, he says teachers decide which holidays are used to makeup the class-time that was missed.

According to Superintendent Hodges, it could be another week or so before the district can release the exact date for when students will makeup the class-time that is being missed due to the snow.

Late Tuesday afternoon administrators with both Meridian and Lauderdale County schools announced that classes for both districts have been canceled for Wednesday.

Faculty, staff and students with Meridian Public Schools will make up that day on the Monday after Easter, which is April 21st.
