"Stars" Preparing to Dance

Meridian, Miss. Just like it has for the past six years, a night of dancing is coming to Meridian once again. On December 6th, 10 couples will take to the dance floor to compete in Dancing Like the Stars, but Leslie Lee with Elegance Ballroom Dance and Fitness Studio, who has choreographed the routines, says there's more to this night than just the dances.

It's just a super fun night where people from all over the community come together to support one great cause, and it's their major fundraiser too."

That cause is the Multi-County Community Service Agency, an organization that helps people with low incomes in six East Mississippi counties. Lee says the 10 couples dancing for MCCSA have put in a lot of hard work so far.

"They get about 8 weeks of practice and rehearsal. None of these couples have ever danced before, much less have even heard of the dances that they're dancing, so it's a lot of fun. It's just like the TV show."

Those dances include the Waltz, Foxtrot, Salsa, and others. WTOK's own Deana Day and Chip Scarborough are just two of the participants, and have been working on their dance for quite some time. They say that it hasn't been easy.

"It's a real challenge and it's for a great cause, and I think that's why we both said 'Yeah, we'd love to do that.' It's a challenge with each other and with ourselves, so we're really working hard. They say you should take chances in life and learn new things, and this is definitely outside of my comfort zone."

Lee emphasizes that this event is a win-win. You get a good show, while supporting a local organization.

"This is the best night in Meridian all year long. Great dinner, great dancing, a wonderful show, and all of it goes to such a great cause."

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by contacting Mary Atterberry at 601-938-2773.
