Columbus, Miss.

James Walter Strobel, who was president of Mississippi University for Women from 1977-88, has died in a car accident in Florida.

MUW made the announcement in a news release Friday. Strobel was 80.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Strobel, of Belvedere, Fla., was killed in Nassau County Wednesday when a tractor-trailer hit the van he was riding in.

Strobel received a bachelor's degree at Ohio University and a doctorate at Washington State University. He came to MUW from North Carolina State University.

Strobel was instrumental in the founding of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, a residential program for high-achieving high school students. He oversaw creation of Plymouth Bluff Environmental Center and the Cromwell Communication Center, home to MUW's theater and communication departments.
