Struggling Clay County Looks to New Plant for Jobs

State officials aren't confirming what new industry might be bound for north Mississippi's Clay County.

State Rep. Tyrone Ellis says the company is based in Tokyo. Tire makers Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. and Bridgestone Corp. are headquartered in that Japanese city.

Another possible candidate is South Korea's Hankook Tire Co. Ltd. Company executives told a tire publication last fall that they were looking for a site to build the company's first U.S. plant.

Mississippi lawmakers will start a special session Friday to discuss incentives for a new factory that would employ hundreds.

West Point residents say they hope new jobs would help lower the local unemployment rate. It has been mired above 10 percent since then-Sara Lee Corp. closed the Bryan Foods plant in 2007, laying off 2,100 workers.
