Meridian, Miss. Students at Poplar Springs Elementary School presented a special program Friday, celebrating Meridian's history and sharing what they have learned in studying about the city.
Third graders also visited many of the historic places around Meridian.
School officials, along with parents, say this is a wonderful way for students to get a real understanding of the history.
"In schools a lot of times we talk about these things, but to open up our walls and go out into the community and actually see our city, and it gives them the opportunity to make the connection to the real world, to what they are studying and the books we have in the classroom," said principal LaVonda Germany."
"I think these are great programs and I know that she has been talking and talking about it, and just so excited," said parent Shawn Robinson. "And it means so much to her."
This is one of the ways Poplar Springs utilizes the integrated arts as part of its curriculum.
