Meridian, Miss. High school seniors in Lauderdale County were recognized for their work in completing the Mississippi Scholars Program.

One hundred and fifty six students from Meridian Public Schools and Lauderdale County Schools completed the program. They finished a rigorous and relevant course of study, along with near perfect attendance and at least twenty hours of community service. The program aims to help students as they advance into the workforce or higher education.

"We know that students who commit to a more difficult course of study become competitive and productive workers," said Kacey Bailey, the education chair of the East Mississippi Business Development Foundation. "We know that an educated workforce makes for a stronger community and that's the purpose behind the program."

Each student received a $125 scholarship, a medallion and a certificate. Newscenter 11's Andrea Williams served as mistress of ceremonies for the event.
