Red Ribbon Week activities continue this week in area schools.

The focus is on positive reinforcement to keep kids away from illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Lauderdale County's drug court, which sees first-hand how drugs can destroy lives, is visiting elementary schools to try to steer young people in the right direction.

"I think you have to start your awareness programs as early as possible and then you can do the intervention," said Doncella Milton, drug court coordinator. "But if you don't get it in now, it'll be too late because I think data shows that by 13, kids are already using."

Students signed pledges to be drug-free.

Outstanding students were recognized for their participation in essay, poetry and coloring contests with a drug-free theme.
