Friday is the city of Meridian's 152nd birthday. On this day in 1860, the city was incorporated.
Students at Poplar Springs Elementary School marked the birthday. Third graders performed a play called Celebrating Meridian.
The event was the culmination of the students recent study of the history of the city, which included visits to several historic sites.
"It's important for our children to know about their history," said principal Lavonda Germany. "Growing up in Meridian, it's important to know about Merrehope, and it's important to know about our Riley Center, because those are places we experienced as Meridianites growing up."
The play was written by one of the teachers at Poplar Springs, based on the experiences the children have had over the last few months.
