Successful Dyslexia Therapy

Meet Hunter Burkett. He is a third grader at Heidelberg Academy who has dyslexia. This is his first year at Heidelberg Academy, and in just two short months, Hunter has progressed from a Kindergarten to a third grade reading level.

Jennifer Burkett, who is Hunter's mother, explains, "He could not read the simple word 'cats,' and he's a third grader. So now, he's reading on third grade level. He had made A's, B's, and C's on his report card. He came from being in special ed to doing third grade work."

Hunter's family members, including his grandfather, can also see the difference at home.

"He can tell that now he doesn't need anyone to read to him. When he would ask him, 'What is on TV?" and we would have to read it. Now, he reads it to us. In church, they cannot stop him from reading," says Burkett.

Miss Burkett tells us it took five years to find a program that is helping her son be able to read, and she wants to encourage other parents to continue searching for that program that will help their child."

"Do not give up. Do not give up," says Burkett. "There is hope out there somewhere. If it's not here close-by, there is somebody that can help you. I do always hope that the public school will put a more of an open eye on this problem that we have than what they have now."
