Sumter Academy Observes Red Ribbon Week

Sumter Academy kicked off Red Ribbon Week Monday and will continue with special activities through the week.

The school hosted a flag dedication ceremony with help from a color guard team from NAS Meridian.

Students also released red balloons to symbolize their commitment to stay away from the use of illegal drugs and from alcohol and tobacco.

Red Ribbon Week began being observed after the murder of U.S. drug enforcement agent Enrique Camarena in Mexico in 1985.

"We want to not only be good citizens, we want to be good American citizens, to honor the flag and the country," said history and science teacher, Mike Morgan. "But first we honor God with our prayer."

The American Legion donated the flag used in the ceremony at Sumter Academy.
