Meridian, Miss. Jimmie Rodgers' place in musical history was examined during a symposium Friday in Meridian.
The 3rd Annual Jimmie Rodgers Symposium is a component of the Jimmie Rodgers Festival. It examines the difference Rodgers has made in country music history. After all, he is known as The Father of Country Music.
"Modern country music, in a way, began with those, when they realized he was their 'father', because it meant it was going to be modernizing, forward looking, and it was going to reach out, not hunker down," said symposium speaker and author, Barry Mazor. "That's what Jimmie was about, and it turned out, what country music was about."
Rodgers' recent induction into the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis was also celebrated Friday.
