Teachers Attend Summer Institute

Meridian, Miss.
The Whole Schools Initiative's Summer Institute began at the MSU Riley Center Monday.

Around 300 teachers from across Mississippi are attending the conference.

Teachers participate in interactive workshops to learn how to use the arts to teach in their classrooms.

Organizers say the main focus for this year's conference is how the arts are an integral part of the Common Core curriculum being implemented in Mississippi.

"How we will be able to use the arts in raising test scores and being able to elevate student achievement and to bring about those critical thinking skills and higher level thinking for students," said Dr. Tom Pearson, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission.

The conference continues through Thursday as teachers attend several workshops over the next couple of days.
