Meridian, Miss. Meridian's City Council members stressed at tonight's meeting one way to get city positions fully staffed is to follow the proper procedures in hiring. The question in particular was over the understaffed Animal Control Division, that only has one person currently employed by the City of Meridian. Council President Dr.George Thomas questioned Police Chief James Lee and Interim CAO Hugh Smith about the status of hiring. Thomas says there's a procedure department heads must go through to hire a position, and it must be followed. "The position must be approved. And it must be advertised appropriately." said Thomas. "After it's advertised, then you must give a test for the position. Then there's an interview procedure, so it's a drawn out procedure."
Interim CAO Hugh Smith is responsible for making sure department heads follow civil service procedures. Smith says there were mistakes made in following procedure.
