Jackson, Miss.

Eight weeks after Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba died not even a year into his term, City Councilman Tony Yarber will be his successor.

Jackson voters elected Yarber in a runoff Tuesday against the late mayor's son, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, an attorney.

Another special election will have to be set to fill Yarber's seat on the council.

Jackson's mayor-elect made his first official appearance at the Minority Male Leadership Advisory Board meeting Wednesday on the campus of the Hinds Community College-Jackson Academic Technical Center.

Within two hours of the polls closing, Yarber had secured enough votes to be declared the winner.

Complete, but unofficial, returns from Tuesday's election show Yarber received 20,463 votes to Lumumba 17,545 votes.
