Tree Giveaway

A local agency is getting an early start on celebrating Arbor Day. The Lauderdale County Soil and Water Conservation District will supply free trees to residents Tuesday. As part of the giveaway, the agency will distribute 3,000 seedlings.

"Forestry is a major industry as it relates to Mississippi, a lot of jobs are attached to that industry,' says District Conservationist, Kelvin Jackson. 'If we don't have timber to cut, then as a result those jobs may not be there."

Behind poultry, forestry is the number two agriculture industry in Mississippi.

The free seedlings will be available at the USDA Service Center, which is located next to the Lauderdale County Agri-Center off Highway 19 in Meridian. They will be available to Lauderdale County residents. One thousand each of Bald Cypress, Nuttall and Loblolly seedlings will be given away as part of the effort. Each year the state of Mississippi recognizes Arbor Day the second Friday in February.
