Marion, Miss. Investigators say a 10-year old child was shot in her side as she was sleeping at her home at Morocco Apartments on Dale Drive around midnight. The bullet exited the other side, grazing her 32-year old mother who was beside her. A younger daughter in the home was not injured. Marion police CPL Arthur Hopson was the first officer on the scene.
"Right now, all we know is a male came through the back door of the apartment and fired a round," said Hopson. "Ended up hitting the female victim, also a child victim. That's all we know at this time. The case is still under investigation."
Hopson says the mother described the intruder only as a black male dressed in black, wearing a black mask. She says he busted in the back door to the apartment, fired shots, then ran away on foot after stealing her purse.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is assisting Marion in the investigation. Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says he doesn't believe the general public should be fearful.
"We believe this is a targeted event. It wasn't random," Calhoun said. "We have reason to believe the individual may have known about this family. Apparently, when they went into the apartment, they did so, just stepped a few feet in, knew where to go, where they were sleeping. We are certainly keeping an open mind, but investigators are working on all angles at this point in time. We are just in the early stages of the investigation, and we'll continue assisting Marion, and hopefully, we'll be able to make a successful arrest and then prosecution for this crime."
The child was first taken to Anderson Hospital, then airlifted to Jackson, where she underwent surgery, and remains in critical condition.
