UMMC Seeks Attorney General's Opinion on Unmarked Graves

Jackson, Miss. The University of Mississippi Medical Center has asked for an attorney general's opinion determining whether the Mississippi Department of Archives and History has authority over the center's ability to relocate unmarked graves.

Officials with that agency say they can already answer that question -- they don't have any authority. They say only a county coroner regulates cemetery relocation.

The medical center found and moved some graves last year while building roads on its Jackson property. It estimates more than 900 graves remain, and possibly many more.

Because of the graves, the university is building a 1,000-space parking garage elsewhere. Plans for two other buildings are on hold.

Spokesman Jack Mazurak says the center wants the ability to move the graves to a campus cemetery and develop the land.
