Meridian, Miss. The United Way of East Mississippi is asking people to step up and help the community as it kicks off its annual fundraising campaign.
For years, the campaign tracked its progress on a bright red thermometer outside the United Way office. That will change this year, as will the setting of a fundraising goal itself.
Campaign director, Sara Odom, said United Way is focused on the human value, not the dollar value.
"And so people can actually feel like when they give, it's not about how much they gave, but how much of an impact it affected the person," said Odom.
The theme of this year's fundraiser is, 'What's Your Story?'
Odom says it's about people sharing their stories about how the United Way and its agencies have touched their lives.
The local organization has 13 partner agencies and 8 community impact programs, which are in-house programs.
The United Way of East Mississippi raised more than $900,000 in the previous campaign.
