Fire officials say this is the time of the year when fires are most prevalent. But there are some things you can do to be safe.

Lauderdale County fire coordinator, Alla Dover, says during the holiday season there are even more dangers. He says one of the most important things is to make sure that you don't overload your circuits by plugging in too many Christmas lights.

"Make sure you're not overloading those circuits," said Dover. "Don't put extension cords or things that allow more than two things to be plugged in to those outlets. We see a lot of possible fires from those. "

Mississippi has one of the highest fire death rates in the nation.
