Veterans Honor Community Standouts

Some local veterans gathered on Saturday evening for a ceremony to celebrate the community.

Veterans hosted an awards banquet in Meridian to honor men and women in this community, as well as other residents and leaders who have made a positive contribution to the area. All the while, not forgetting the importance of patriotism.

"We've lost that thrill of being an American," according to Norman Copeland, commander of VFW 12124. "So, we want to try to inspire folks. It's a joy to us to see these children write their essays in high school and give their speeches. The junior high school kids that do their work. We've also got ROTC Cadettes here today, Civil Air Patrol Cadettes. Those are our future."

More than 30 awards were handed out. WTOK-TV is a proud recipient of a community service award.
