Voting Changes Proposed to Alabama Legislature

Montgomery, Ala. Alabama's chief election official is asking the Legislature to make several changes related to voting.

Secretary of State Jim Bennett says one bill in the legislative session starting Tuesday will help ensure that absentee ballots from the military get counted on time. The bill moves up the deadline for candidates to sign up to run. That will allow Bennett to comply with an agreement he's reached with Justice Department to get absentee ballots to overseas voters sooner.

Bennett is also supporting a bill to allow Alabama to join a compact of states checking for duplications in voter registrations. Another bill he's supporting would allow voter registrars to investigate written reports from poll workers that say a voter may have moved or died.
