WTOK-TV Marks 60th Anniversary

Meridian, Miss. Thursday is a very special day for the WTOK family. It was on this date 60 years ago, Sept. 26, 1953, that WTOK signed on the air as the second television station in the state, and Mississippi's first wide area VHF station.

The goal of the founding staff members was to have the station on the air in time for Meridian area viewers to see the New York Yankees face the Brooklyn Dodgers in the '53 World Series, and they were successful. So were the Yankees, in 6 games.

WTOK has been fortunate to have wonderful viewers, who have trusted this station for generations to be the leader in providing information and entertainment all across East Mississippi and West Alabama. It is a trust we don't take for granted.

We are committed to continuing that tradition for the next 60 years and beyond, across every medium, television, digital, and mobile.

This station, like any business, is only as successful as its employees, and WTOK has been blessed through the years to have some of the best. Many spent their whole careers here, while some were only here for a short time, yet made tremendous contributions to the station and the community.

To each of the WTOK family members who served over these 60 years and those that continue today, I offer my sincere thanks for your commitment. It is truly a privilege to be the steward of this great organization.

Most importantly, thank YOU, our loyal viewers who have made this station your dominant media source for 60 great years. We are truly grateful.
