Walk to School Month Observed

Meridian, Miss. Meridian city employees and volunteers walked to school with students Friday.

It was part of a National Walk to School Month observance, encouraging safe routes for kids.

Meridian Mayor Percy Bland was one of those accompanying Northwest Middle School and West Hills Elementary students on their way to class.

"It gives us a chance to magnify the importance of safe routes to schools, so the kids can come to school and do well in school, and that's what we want in this community," said Mayor Percy Bland.

Northwest principal, Jackie McFarland, says there are many benefits to walking instead of riding.

"There's always the health factor, as far as getting exercise, so that's always a benefit from walking," said Northwest Middle School principal, Jackie McFarland. "But we just want to encourage them to be safe and let other people that are driving, dropping off kids, to be aware of our students that are walking. "

McFarland says there are about 100 Northwest students who walk to school each day.
