There are some preventive methods you may take to help keep you safe from West Nile virus.

One proactive way is controlling the mosquito population around your home.

Steve Parker of Planters Supply says you can't totally stop mosquitoes but a weekly regimen of spraying can help. Parker says the best time to spray is around 2-2:30 p.m.

"That's when the mosquitoes roost," said Parker. "That's where they'll go during the hot part of the day. They will go under the shrubbery. The best way to control them is to spray the shrubbery."

There are also products to use on your lawn and tablets you can put in bodies of water to kill larvae.
You should eliminate any standing water that collects in tires or containers, because mosquitoes will breed there too.

If you are out in the early morning hours or late evening hours, wear long sleeves, a hat, and use lotions and skin sprays recommended to protect you from bites.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 17 new cases of the virus this week in Mississippi. That brings the total so far this year to 192 cases, with four deaths.
