Wesley House Has Last Minute Needs

Christmas is less than a week away and there are still some last minute needs for one local charity. Wesley House Community Center is on track to serve a record number of people for the holiday. Ginger Grissom is executive director for the center. She says she's never witnessed the need being so great.

'This year it's kind of overwhelming.'

In the week or so leading up to Christmas, Wesley House officials usually receive a few requests for emergency assistance. However, this year the number of people requesting this type assistance is up drastically. Within the last two weeks, enough people have requested emergency holiday assistance to fill two folders. Officials say all of the people listed in the folders have legitimate needs.

'These are people who have been in the hospital; had a burnout; had a robbery or some type of victimization. They've lost a job, that kind of thing. They have to show these things on paper.'

To help meet the need, Grissom says people can make donations in honor of someone else.

'So we do that and the person it honors will receive a nice card saying that in lieu of a present a donation has been made in their honor.'

Donations can also be made in memory of individuals.

'We still need bikes and balls and jewelry sets and something for middle school age children.'

Wesley House officials will continue preparing packages for people in need up until Christmas Eve. For more information on how you can help, call Grissom at (601) 527-5633.

Last year Wesley House served more than 1,800 people. This year it will serve even more. Grissom says there's a checks and balances system the agency uses to verify the needs and make sure that recipients are not receiving duplicate services.
