Work Underway to Remove Abandoned Boats in South Alabama

Mobile, Ala. More than eight years after Hurricane Katrina, work is finally underway to remove some abandoned boats from south Alabama waterways.

The nonprofit Dog River Clear Water Revival and area residents have obtained grant money to remove 24 boats.

They say the boats are dangerous for anyone navigating the waterways and that they leach dangerous toxins into the ecosystem.

The 24 boats will be removed by May 22 and organizers hope to get more money to remove additional abandoned vessels.
