Work continues to recover Mississippi miners

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss. Copiah County Emergency Management and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency say they have been notified that Green Brothers Gravel Company has started pumping water out of the pit where two miners became trapped Friday.

The names were not officially released but WLBT-TV in Jackson reported the families of the missing men have identified them as Emmitt Shorter and James "Dee" Hemphill.

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration is overseeing the operation. An industrial crane, which had been brought in Saturday, was unable to recover the two miners and the equipment where the men are believed to be trapped.

Green Brothers and MSHA have been in charge of the recovery operation since it occurred close to 11:30 a.m. June 3.

Copiah County, MEMA and other state resources are providing support to the operation as requested.

The miners were operating heavy equipment when they were completely buried in 10 feet to 12 feet of mud, slush and sluice.
