Meridian, Mississippi The Jimmie Rodgers Festival officially concluded Sunday with a ceremony to honor the Father of Country Music.
A special wreath laying ceremony took place at the grave site of country singer and Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers. Fans and relatives of Rodgers were on hand for the event. Some songs were sung in remembrance of Rodgers, along with some great stories.
"Each year on May 26th, which is the day that he died in 1933, the foundation sponsors a wreath laying ceremony," Betty Lou Jones says. "And we place new flowers and we invite friends, and fans, and family to come pay homage to the International Singing Brakeman."
Sunday marked the 80th anniversary of Jimmie Rodgers death. Rodgers passed away at the taft hotel just two days after completing his final recordings.
